Welcome to the Academy

Built through
perseverance.

Open to everyone.

10th Planet South Bay is the premier destination for No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the heart of the South Bay. Led by world-class instructors, we offer a supportive, ego-free environment where students of every level can learn, train, and grow.

What started as Coach PJ Barch’s first program in late 2016 has weathered three relocations, hundreds of dedicated students, and a community that refused to quit. Today the academy lives in a state-of-the-art facility on Third Ave in Chula Vista — built by the perseverance of PJ and the team that stuck with him.

What students
are saying

Zero ego.

01
The space is awesome, you would be hard pressed to find a gym with a higher concentration of top-tier talent to learn from. PJ and the rest of the coaches are deeply invested in every student's development. Whether you're brand new or chasing competition, this is the place.
Phillip Teixeira
02
My children love and look forward to coming to this gym every day. They work hard and have fun. The Little Panthers and Kids classes are run with patience and energy — Coach Joey and the team have built something my kids actually ask to do.
Justin Sams
03
I'm a beginner in BJJ and everyone — PJ, Dawna, Allen — has been so welcoming and patient. Walked in nervous, walked out wanting to come back the next day. Real coaches, real instruction, zero ego.

Common Questions

Everything you need
to walk in ready

Still have questions? Call (619) 746-8892 or email info@10thplanetsouthbay.com — we’ll get you set.

Students arrive with clean bodies, gear, and breath. Shoes go on the rack in the mud room before entering the mats. Use the foot wash station before stepping onto the mats. A clean set of training gear is required for every class — never wear the same gear twice in one day. Bring a dry top and bottom to change into after class. No training with skin irregularities. Trim and file finger and toe nails before every class. Showers are available on-site; if you can't shower right away, wipe down with tea-tree-oil-based wipes (Defense Soap) and shower as soon as possible.

Males — shorts (no zipper or pockets) and a compression top or rashguard. Compression undergarment or spats required, with shorts worn over spats (2-layer rule on the bottom). Females — leggings and a compression top or rashguard, with a compression sports bra. Bring a change of clean clothes for after practice, a bag for your gear, a small towel for sweat, and a large towel and soap if you plan to shower.

Jiu-Jitsu is rewarding. Expect to get tired and sweaty while having a great time and learning to defend yourself. Consistency over time equals results — that's the C/T = R formula we live by. Brand-new students start in a beginner-friendly Level 1 class; experienced grapplers can drop straight into Mixed Levels.

Not at all. Most of our students walk in with zero experience. Level 1 classes are built specifically to give you a foundation of principles and concepts you'll use for the rest of your training career. If you have prior experience and want to skip ahead, you can register for a free trial of a Mixed Levels class.
